Content brief template for B2B SaaS teams

Most content fails not because of bad writing, but because of bad briefs. This template gives your team a standard format that covers everything AI or a human writer needs to produce on-brand, high-quality content on the first attempt.

Content objective

  • What business goal does this content serve? (awareness, consideration, conversion)
  • What action should the reader take after reading?
  • How does this piece connect to existing content or campaigns?

Target audience

  • Who is the primary reader? (role, seniority, industry)
  • What problem are they trying to solve right now?
  • What do they already know about the topic?
  • What objections or skepticism might they have?

Content angle and structure

  • What is the main thesis or argument?
  • What is the unique angle that differentiates this from existing content?
  • Suggested format: listicle, how-to, framework, comparison, opinion
  • Required sections or H2 headings
  • Word count target and depth level

Proof points and evidence

  • What data, case studies, or examples should be included?
  • Are there internal metrics or customer stories to reference?
  • What claims need source attribution?
  • What claims are off-limits or unverified?

SEO and distribution

  • Primary keyword and secondary keywords
  • Search intent: informational, commercial, navigational
  • Internal links to include (at least 2-3 related pages)
  • Distribution channels: blog, LinkedIn, newsletter, paid

Brand and tone

  • Voice reference: link to brand voice document or context pack
  • Tone for this specific piece: authoritative, conversational, technical
  • Words or phrases to avoid
  • Required terminology or product names to use correctly

Approval criteria

  • Who reviews and approves this content?
  • What is the deadline for first draft?
  • What constitutes a pass vs. revision request?

Tips for using this template

  • Fill in the brief before writing or generating anything. A 15-minute brief saves hours of revision.
  • If you cannot answer the audience and angle sections, the content is not ready to be produced.
  • Use the same template for AI-generated and human-written content. The structure works for both.
  • Review and update your brief template quarterly based on which sections cause the most revision cycles.
